Coming Up
Last Updated: 19/09/2007 16:14:04
Wednesday 26th September 07 - Off The Road 2 At The New Adelphi 7.30pm - 11 p.m

Following the warm reception of its last outing, the Urban Artz 'Off The Road' variety show is riding back into town at the New Adelphi Club this month, with its unique mix of original music, poetry, performances and theatre - a fun-packed ride well worth the modest £3 bus fare.

The evening will be hosted by banjo-strumming and self-confessed big mouth Jim Sorrow, who is invited back after the enthusiastic vitriol that he hedonistically displayed during Off The Road's debut outing in August.
Also back for a second pop at the Adelphi microphone is rapidly up-and-coming motor-mouth poet Mike Watts, with his frenetic, white-knuckle delivery of caustic urban observations.

Also on the spoken word front will be Hidden Hull and Urban Artz regular Philip Wincolmlee Barnes. Being best described as a kind of 'alternative reality Jackanory', Hidden Hull informs us: Imagine a Tourist Information worker who has gone off the rails and decided to rewrite the history of Hull.
Wincolmlee, on the other hand, is offering Pitch Imperfect, a deft (and no doubt rather salubrious) account of the many failed pitches that he has made to television companies, theatres and publishers over the years.

Also joining the writers will be the poet (and also prolific music promoter and reviewer) Michelle Dee, presenting work from her pithy, entertaining, and sometimes intentionally scathing oeuvre.

In partnership with the International Hearts Festival, the 2nd Off The Road event will also be showcasing Congolese singer and dancer Kamambill Buko in his first appearance at Hull's renowned Adelphi club.
The all-female theatre troupe Scarlet Lights will be presenting the second part of their sensational show Sheality, the first feisty instalment of which went down a storm with audiences last month, with part two promising to raise the bar even further.

In between Sam Jones, The Bad Apples, Applemax (no relation) and The James Dean Syndrome will be providing diverse and distinct musical sets.

Despite his unassuming moniker, Sam's well-crafted songs are a sometimes less-than subtle blend of life-affirming defiance, a relentless pillorying of celebrity culture and, occasionally, even somewhat askew takes of theological proportions.
Despite their self-deprecating description of being 'pretentious' and 'tone deaf', Applemax's off-kilter electronica offers the kind of frantic aural effect that might be created by a room full of domestic appliances trying to escape all at the same time, and in different directions.

Grimsby-based The Bad Apples are a female-fronted band who perform an intense hybrid of wild Rockabilly, Surf, Country and Punk. Their reputation is quickly gaining ground after recently heading the 2007 Eco-Festival.
Headliners are The James Dean Syndrome, the hip groove-setting cats who parade suave dandy drumbeats and cream-filled guitar licks. Guaranteed to get everybody's mojo working, they will be a fitting climax to an evening spilling over with home-grown maverick talent and entertainment.

All in all, for only £3 on the door, the best ride imaginable awaits those boarding the 2nd Off The Road pleasure trip.
