As a resident of Ella Street I was pleased as punch to hear that this year we would be holding our very own festival, open to everyone. A group of residents had got together and organised this - well done to them all. About a week ago the banner and bright bunting went up, and the street held its breath waiting for this very special event... Last Saturday couldn't have been a better day for it, the sun was beating down, people were out in their droves and sitting out on the pavement chatting.

There was the sense of a real community and it was good to see familiar as well as unfamiliar faces. The road had been blocked off for the day and it was a great feeling to see kids playing safely in the wide space.

As I made my way down I stopped at several interesting table top sales selling everything from jewellery to small pets! After discovering a lovely jewellery box, a bargain at 2 quid, that was me happy for the day.

As well as the usual bouncy castles and face painting, I saw many workshops going on. The Scrapstore team were out in full force, and people were making mosaics from broken tiles which were quite pretty. Also there was a tug of war, a giant catapult from which soggy sponges flew past you occasionally and a remote controlled model car race. I heard there was Crazy Ellympics (get the pun? I didn't til just now) including a wheely bin race, but sadly I missed this spectacle.

On the temporary stage down Trinity Grove there was a kid's disco, a Status Quo tribute band Heavy Traffic, Indian bhangra dancing and a salsa session which lots of people young and old joined in.

Some usual suspects had stalls at the festival, including Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth, both in keeping with the image of Ella Street being home to many people of a liberal, Green persuasion. Also there was the Orangutan Foundation which I admit I had never heard of before. You learn something new every day.. Thankfully though the community barbecue wasn't all vegetarian food but divided up into fish, veggie and meat sections.

Taking place near the temporary stage and PA down Trinity Grove, the theme was bring your own grub and have buns, salad and sauces provided. Excellent! Entertainment then followed in the form of two fire eaters who wowed the kids (and us) with their flame throwing and juggling.
