Make Poverty History Demonstration in Edinburgh 2nd July 2005 by Rich Mills

Having been a political activist for many years now, when the Make Poverty History demonstration came around, we just had to do something about it. The result being that with a lot of work from Martin Deane collecting money in, we managed to send a hundred people up to Edinburgh for the day. Along with another hundred or so who made their own way up to Scotland, Hull was well represented.

With all in good spirits we descended on The Meadows in the heart of the Scottish capital, along with 200,000 of more others from all over the world. From babes in arms, to the elderly, people truly came from all walks of life. People united under one call, that they wanted the G8 leaders to listen, they wanted them to do something to bring world poverty to an end at the beginning of the 21st Century.

So there we were, a sea of white, with a few dots of black creating a giant human band around the city centre of Edinburgh. Many of the people there had never been on a demonstration before, many were old hands at it. All behaved with a patient calm, fitting for the purpose of the day, and the message we were sending.

We queued for nearly 2 hours, just to get onto the streets, as the biggest mass movement of people Scotland has ever seen got underway. Having managed to stay the course, we all proudly made our way back to Hull. Another 6 hour road journey ahead of us. Now comes the real work. The Make Poverty History march was the beginning, and not the end. Next came the calls from the press, and interviews to be done. Next comes the Global Day of Action, as the G8 opens on Wednesday 6th July.

Next comes the gathering in Victoria Square, the continued ramming home of the message. Next comes the riots and dissent in Scotland, as the hardcore element of the Anti-Capitalist movement state their case.

Now comes the waiting, as we hope and pray that the G8 have listened, that they have taken notice of what the people of the world want, and not what their corporate backers tell them to do. As without any real change, the peaceful march of Saturday will be a thing of the past. These 8 men of violence will not be allowed to get away with it any longer, they have been given their last chance.

Next time we will not be on the streets asking them for change, next time we will be on the streets forcing that change with an uprising the likes of which the world has never seen.
