Unfortunately I arrived late to find that I'd missed the first band of the night, The Cardinals. I was told that it had been their debut gig. No doubt I'll get another chance to catch them somewhere soon. Having already seen The Vultures play once before, I thought I knew more or less what to expect. It turns out that I can't have paid that much attention to them on that first occasion.

From the first song I began thinking that The Vultures were in fact pretty good, but as the set progressed, their bouncy tunes just became more and more infectious. By the time the last few songs came around I had made up my mind that I really do love this band! One of the highlights for me would have to have been Shambles.

It was the one song I recognised and it sounds a hell of a lot more impressive live. Although the band do sound great on CD, tonight showed me that they need to be seen live to be fully appreciated. The music was packed full of energy, which only seemed to increase as the set progressed, at times with a strong Libertines sound to both the music and vocals. Having said that, in no way are these guys another indie band trying to jump on The Libertines' bandwagon. Singer, Chris, came across as being quite quirky, managing to keep the audiences attention, also showing that a saucepan and spoon isn't just for cooking.

The lead guitar had moments of sounding slightly Franz Ferdinand and with some Alex Kapranos style foot stomping moves to match, although minus the fashionable indie clothes. Although something rather refreshing about this band was indeed the fact that they clearly did care more about their music than their image, which is of course the way it should be but so often isn't the case. Despite these comparisons to current indie bands, The Vultures seem to have distanced themselves from the indie scene and label. Perhaps this is due to the fact that they do manage to have a more unique sound than most, which is certainly no bad thing.

In 2005 we were bored, we formed a band it says on their website. Good choice lads.

Next up were Mr Mojo. The songs were catchy, enjoyable to listen to and definitely have that commercial appeal. On meeting lead singer Kristian, I struggled to imagine him singing but, as soon as he got on stage, it all fell into place. It was the way he looked, sang, moved and his lead singer type cockiness that made him look as though he'd have been more at home in some chart topping boy band, rather than being part of a local band on stage at the Adelphi.
