What a fantastic night.
No really, if you weren't there then you missed out on seeing some of the finest
bands the other side of sanity.
The monthly local music magazine, oft slated in its own backyard landed a
winning formula tonight.
Ernest, who everyone should experience, continue to be spine
tingling and achingly beautiful.
Last night they grabbed hold of my heartstrings and pulled till tears welled and
threatened to spill out in the corners of my eyes.
A number of people came up to me after their set and asked how they could help make
Ernest huge - they are amazing.
Sad truth is, if they do make it we really won't see much of each other.
|
|
|
Having made the passage into Ernest territory five or six times
in the last month, I have to agree with Debbie; tonight they really were
magnificent, possibly the best I have ever seen them.
This was partly due to the top quality sound that Matt
the engineer Edible managed to
nail at the back of the room, and the fact that a tighter band with more
passion than Ernest has yet to be found.
|
|
So on to one of Sheffield's finest, Rumpus.
A band that came highly recommended by both Alan Raw and Katie Noone of the
BBC Raw Talent team.
The opening chords of The Woods, lead me down dark treacherous paths.
The lead singer has a certain charm and charisma that pricks at the rebellious
side of human consciousness. Those cowboys out there sound real good, and
I sure as hell want to get dirty with them.
|
|
|
Whether he is squatting down singing into his radio mic, roaming the stage, or
with one foot on the amp, he looks every bit the genuine article.
The sound at times is reminiscent of RATM with occasional Marilyn Manson deep throat delivery.
|
During their set the short haired five-piece also remove items of clothing like
Rage, but manage to retain their dignity, where the U.S. rockers failed repeatedly.
The heavily played Ohh Yeah has an upbeat new romantic edge.
In contrast, Let me in has a darker theme running through it, dealing with
that strange masculine desire to return to the womb.
Tonight's Adelphi crowd were not what you would call thrashy metal fans and
the levels of applause reflected this.
They did, however, like the song Sex Cop, which raised the biggest cheer.
|
|
|
Rumpus need more of a metal orientated audience to be fully appreciated,
to this end, they are returning to Hull on May 13 to headline at the much talked of
White Room venue.
If you or I were in a band that combined electro synth romanticism, with death metal
indie rock they'd probably say, nnnah. Rumpus makes it work.
Scaramanga Six, there's got to be a Bond reference there me thinks.
The Leeds six-piece scared me, with dark humour and devilish songs; like the
soundtrack of Hades with Cerberus howling at the gates.
An absolute powerhouse of strange hybrid rock.
They look like the kind of group who would play tombstones with wolf bones in the dead of night.

Midge Ure at Pocklington Arts Centre - Wednesday 13th April 05 By Steve Rudd
|
|
Let me first just say that the Pocklington Arts Centre is a truly fantastic venue, and it's
quite amazing that such a quality venue graces a town that is so small.
Nestling perfectly to one side of the town's charming Market Square, this venue
is a theatre, concert hall and

On a Thursday afternoon I stood outside Debenhams in town waiting for the minibus to arrive from Hedon.
Today I was travelling to London to see Ernest headline in Camden.

Sal Paradise at The White Room - Saturday 19th March 05 By Anthony Baine
|

This is the first article I've ever written for thisisUll.com.
Even though I've logged on regularly for the past year or so, and I follow the local music
scene avidly, I've never been moved to put pen to paper. Until now.
About six months ago, I wandered down to The Sesh

Saturday 12th March 05 - Soulflame at the White Room By Michelle Dee
|
|
Soulflame have strong Puddle of Mudd influences in both sound and song construction.
The E.P. is more melodic and measured than the live performance.
Nic's vocals are at times quite balladic. He reaches for the high notes with a fresh
enthusiasm
