19th September 06 - Paul The Girl and Matt Edible at the New Adelphi By Michelle Dee

Its blisteringly hot the air cons knackered there are young louts on stage pretending to be bad ass gangstas from da Bronx with little or nothing to say. They go on about being open to ideas, accepting everyone for what they are and being free doing what you do, but it is all bullshit. Judging by the racket they were making in the corridor whilst the visiting artist Paul The Girl was playing her set they couldn't give a toss about anything but themselves and their small drug addled minds.

First off the unusual looking singer songwriter doesn't look to happy to be playing tonight. She seems somewhat distracted -I noticed a few times that she appeared to be looking around for something- but it may just be a characteristic of the on stage persona. For al the talk of lurid lyrical content in Paul's songs she is dressed more than respectably in mid length denim skirt and patterned cherry red blouse. The first part of the set is given over to more balladry style songs slow numbers with a voice that could be compared to early Cerys Matthews. Sadly these more delicate vocals are drowned out by the disrespectful crew massacring Sweet Home Alabama in the corridor.

Later during the more vitriolic number possibly called Human Bun the voicing is more akin to P.J. Harvey's impassioned delivery. An odd choice of words that; devour me I feel like a human bun screamed down the mic. Dark clatters of chords hurry over each other as Paul's intensity grows. A Peculiar voicing is added so different words and phrases stand out during half sung half spoken verse.

An unearthly drone cuts through the crowd demanding they either shut up and listen or leave for whence they came. There follows a surprising segue into a reworking of Since I've Been Loving You by Led Zeppelin. Paul down tunes her guitar to create the bass line, loops the sound then proceeds to play the Jimmy Page riffage with eye catching accuracy. All the while she puts on her own unique vocal style to Plant's lyrics. Shouty, soft, whisper, wail; it's all there but given a new twist. Then by using the electronic trickery at her feet she can revert back to chord progressions, refrains created earlier.

The Led Zep. classic rock vein goes down well with the older crowd the youngsters seem to have left, past their bedtimes, most definitely. She rocks harder than my weekend breaking rocks to lay a rock hard stone path, says Wendy from the Adelphi.

I stay long enough to see Matt Edible get up and reduce the buzzing crowd to absolute silence. He only does two numbers tonight the first a film themed new one and the increasingly demanded and demanding Astronauts. The voice like an unholy match between Nick Drake and Shane McGowan as he moves from beatific melodies to raging explosions. His honest heartfelt lyrics echo through every open mind and serve as a constant reminder that there can be no better feeling than watching a genuinely talented artist sharing his craft.
