ROCK! This is something that seemed to be sadly lacking in Hull in recent years, though once again Ringside seems to be at the forefront of this with some visionary booking. Such was the case tonight, with RingsideLightning Jack Cane and his rock revival disco in the downstairs bar of Ringside, with a sizeable number of real rockers (of all ages) making a suitable warm up prior to my venturing upstairs, where there was a respectable, if not exactly sizeable crowd. The beauty of Ringside I have noticed previously is that a great atmosphere is created with a modest number of people as when it's full.

Though there were around 50 people in tonight, you would have thought there were considerably more from the reception of all three bands on show, starting with opening act, Slite Return, who were drafted in as replacement for the advertised Ivy Sins who had been forced to pull out, I was told by the bubbly Hayley on the door. It was a shame but it seems that far too many bands in Hull have no sense of responsibility to the local promoters/venues).

As it was, Slite Return proved to be a revelation. Hailing from Sheffield and all appearing to be mid 20's, they were experienced musicians and had a some great tunes on display. They had a sound very much like Foo Fighters at the start but then slipped into an early Manic Street Preachers sound that I was well impressed with. Singer Andy's voice was striking and really suited the songs, as well as I've heard a band in a while. They would definitely be a band to look out for.

There had been a great deal of interest in this show tonight, largely down to the second band, Maeven, 5 stunning rock chicks from Sheffield.

There seems to be a slew of girl bands in the UK that can out-glam and rock as hard as the boys (The Hedrons from Scotland and The Tommys, are just a couple). They were definitely a pocket rocket of a band who ripped into glam punk rock with a great deal of maturity, even having the balls to cover you shook me all night long by AC/DC which seemed to ignite the crowd.
