March saw Pure Techno, one of Hull's leading innovators and celebrators of new electronic music celebrate its 3rd birthday at the Welly Club. After the (really rather sad) demise of the Rhythm Room earlier in the year, Pure Techno was forced to relocate its base of operations to the Welly Club, the birthday celebrations on the 30th being the first Pure Techno manoeuvre at the new venue. At the end of the never-ending mundane task that is Friday, our arrival at Welly was greeted by hardened residents Biskit and Maily kicking proceedings off in the main room.

With the night due to finish at the previously unheard-of time of 3am, no moment was lost in transforming Welly's upstairs into a frenzy of looped beats.

Not being a huge fan of the conventional yet oh-so-predictable 'warm up' sets that are commonplace, a smug smile spread across my face as I walked into what can only really be described as a sweatbox of grinding techno and booty clappin' beats.

As Maily and Biskit rounded off their set to appreciative applause, the crowd turned to Neil Landstrumm. Poised on stage behind an enormous bank of screens, knobs and faders, he didn't look entirely dissimilar to Han Solo behind the controls Millenium Falcon. Landstrumm immediately threw the place in at the deep end, lifting off with a barrage of low end business which could surely be heard/felt across the county.

Reverberating through an extended set of filthy electronic beats, Landstrumm well and truly delivered, providing 2 hours of something so irresistible yet so off-the-wall. Top marks. As Landstrumm wound down, the ever-reliable Swiv stepped up to the 1s and 2s (unfortunately he was missing the 3s) and ripped the upstairs a new exit hole as usual, knocking out straight up, balls-to-the-wall techno until the dying moments.
