Thursday arriving early before all the prom kids arrived we slid into the lounge downstairs at the Welly. Drinks in hand we grooved to the Latino sounds of the Spanish Hustle and kudos to the DJ downstairs for spinning the Junior Jack track featuring The Cure's Robert Smith. As more prom kids came in, ready to party, the sounds changed to pop and dance hits; Timberlake and Ellis-Bextor et al, so we moved on into the larger room to await the arrival of the Maltese Mixers, South Central www.myspace.com/southcentralmusic

The room was filling up fast and by midnight the guest DJs finally came on. So what do they do, these visitors from Malta via Brighton? By elevating three minute indie anthems to new heights they lift the lid on a huge spectrum of sonic possibilities. Smashing up CSS and paring down Blue Monday by New Order, the pair mess up minds of young Indie fans.

Synths and keys do battle, with breaks, breakdowns and beats as regular floor fillers are reworked and given new identities. High pitched pinnacles of sound, moments of sheer euphoria, recall the days of the hedonistic rave.

The young crowd seem a little lost when their fave guitar anthem gets mashed up and drowned in a sea of deeply satisfying bass. South Central take the cross over thinking to new, more extreme, levels and if tonight is anything to go by will given time collect fans from teens to thirty-somethings with ease. Not only do they play other artists tunes they use their material too; in particular, one that comes through the sonic collage more than once called Castle Of Heroes.

Sliding in Higher State of Consciousness that huge tune by Josh Wink (1995), had me and Hannah Sandman waving hands in the air, in glittering waves of nostalgia. I watched them continue dancing all the while and wondered how they would conclude such an eclectic set. After what must have been well over an hour of mentalist sounds; splicing sublime anthems with intricate original material the dancing duo finished with a Shychild remix. Roars of approval and hands in the air again, more dancing and waving, followed South Central of the decks.

What South Central said about the Welly crowd tonight after praising the sound system. They're growing musically, the genre is getting bigger so they are just getting used to the sound... South Central as mentioned earlier incorporate original material from their five piece indie/dance styled band.
