After being approached by CRS Events to help promote The Blueskins visit to Hull it was with a sense of dismay that I learned that the band had taken the decision to split up the week before. They were playing their existing dates then calling it a day. It would seem that having EMI and Domino in your corner is not enough to guarantee successful tour attendances.

The Blueskins have faced an upward struggle since their inception, due to a number of significant line changes and the fact their style of music is heavily influenced by the blues. Unusually for a northern band their fan-base is heavily made up of stateside fans. News to quit was greeted by 200 song downloads a day and an outcry from fans around the world. Even the potent power of Lynx didn't help them when their scene stealing Change My Mind song was used in the commercial featuring the naked guy in the night club. Remember it girls, boys?

I'm glad thisisUll and The Blueskins' own PR made a noise about the gig because it resulted in comfortable numbers in the Adelphi. Front man and lead vocalist Steve was mourning the loss heavily but was determined to play out their last four or five shows. Before the last Hull appearance by The Blueskins we were treated to two strong performances by two local but very different bands.

First were Kalel's Cape flying high since recording single Getting Back with producer Jay Reynolds who has worked with Just Jack and Blur amongst others. I sat down with lead singer Shane Murray and got the low down on what'd been happening since I'd seen them at the end of last year. It would seem a lot has been happening. Kalel's Cape have been quietly and not so quietly making a name for themselves on the northern circuit; Doncaster, Leeds, York, Manchester to name but four.
