Book For Whoever - Fans Pay Tribute To The Beautiful South

Forty fans of pop group The Beautiful South have joined forces to create a book which reveals how the band's songs touched their lives.

Book For Whoever - named in tribute to the band's first hit Song For Whoever in 1989 - features emotional, amusing and thoughtful insights into what specific songs meant to just some of their thousands of fans worldwide.

There are contributions from fans in Italy, USA and Hungary, as well as from those in the UK. Singer Alison Wheeler, who became the band's female vocalist in 2003, and long-serving member of the brass section Gaz Birtles, from Leicester, have both also added their thoughts.
The book, which is available from www.bookforwhoever.com, was the brainchild of fan Ian Reece, from Derby, who thought it would be a fitting tribute to The Beautiful South after the band announced their split early in 2007, after almost two decades of making music.

'Many fans were naturally very upset by the announcement that the band was splitting. The Beautiful South's music had been a big part of their lives,' explains Ian, 39. 'I thought it would be a good idea to ask people to write down their thoughts and memories surrounding a particular South song, and the idea just grew from there until we had a book.'
The cover has been designed by George Nawrocky, 56, a fan from New York, and uses drawings by two British fans, Kirsten Price, 19, from Southampton, and Mark Patterson, 35, from Canterbury.
Ian co-edited the book with fellow fan Louise Duffield, 41, who is a journalist from Nottingham.

'It may sound a bit dramatic, but The Beautiful South had a tight-knit and friendly community of fans - many of whom had know each other for years through going to gigs and chatting via the internet - and the split almost felt like bereavement to many of us,' explains Louise.

'We were very upset that we would no longer be meeting regularly for gigs. Writing this has been very therapeutic, and is helping us come to terms with the end of a chapter in our lives.
It's really fascinating to see what South songs mean to so many different people, of different ages, from different walks of life and from different countries.

'Paul Heaton and Dave Rotheray have been an amazing song-writing duo for a period that's spanned three decades, and their songs have been an important part of music's history. This book is our tribute to their work.'
Among those who have contributed to the book are Dawn Mickleburgh, 42, from Hull, and Steve Medcalf, a builder and volunteer lifeboat man from Withernsea.

Book For Whoever has been published by www.lulu.com and is available from www.bookforwhoever.com , priced £7.49, rising to £10 from April 30th. A download version is also available for £4.50. Two pounds from each version is going to charity.

It will also be on sale at the Beautiful South musical The Slide, which runs from 30th May to 2nd June at the Phoenix Theatre, New College, Swindon. www.theslide.co.uk
