Council Leader Celebrates Cultural Diversity in Hull

Cllr. Carl Minns Pledged his personal and the council's support today at the opening of the second annual Newland avenue international festival. In a ceremony at the Community Enterprise Centre on Cottingham Road, Cllr Minns praised the passion of the organisers, and all those taking part in the festival which includes over 50 separate events in and around Newland avenue running up to Sunday 13th July 2008. The children of Sidmouth St. Primary school, many of whom were dressed in traditional national dress, and waving the flags of all the countries represented, provided the entertainment, rounding off the occasion with their version of 'I'd like to teach the world to sing.'

Cllr Minns went on to say that when he first came to hull he could never imagine how cosmopolitan the city had now become; "because of the wealth of cultures that live and have businesses in the area, and the city, every resident could almost travel the world in experiences down just one street".

Abel Rivera, Chair of the festival organisers says, 'It's an honour to be involved with the organisation of the festival once again this year. We have worked hard to bring a range of different events that will appeal to all, both young and old, and at the end of the week I hope Newland Avenue will be firmly established as the cosmopolitan centre of Hull."
