An Interview With The Five O'Clock Heroes (1/4)
By Michelle Dee
People Gallery By Julia Grant
(1/4), (2/4), (3/4). (4/4).

Photograph Gallery   Gallery 1,    Gallery 2.
Mich: Where does the name Five O'Clock Heroes come from?

Ant: It comes from a Jam song Just Who Is the 5 O'Clock Hero? A reviewer once referred to it as the weakest Jam single.

Jules: Are you big fans of The Jam then?

Ant: Musically I don't think they influence us, how we play or how we sound, but maybe on the bus we'll listen to them.
Jules: Can I just ask if you've heard the song Liza Radley?

Ant: Maybe we should've done!

Jules: I think it was a B-side, that's why nobody's heard of it.

Mich: Ok. So the single Skin Deep, when's it out?

Ant: March 19th.
Mich: What's it about and when was it written? Where does it come from?

Ant: Actually it was going to be a B-side initially, but it became quite strong. I think it was catchy and people were paying attention to it. This happened really quickly so we thought we should record this, and see how it sounds.

Mich: Where was it recorded?
Ant: In Portland, New York.

Mich: 'Strokeable limited 7 inch single' - what's that all about then?

Nader: I don't know, maybe there's something on there? (A discussion confirms it has nothing to do with The Strokes)
Jules: Maybe it's something you touch on the cover?

Nader: Yeah, that's what I thought it was.

Mich: We'll have to get one and find out! Anyway, I wanted to ask, when did Sam your drummer join the band?
Nader: Sam joined about a year ago. We had a different drummer before then and it didn't work out, but we had a tour in the UK with the Paddingtons so we got Sam and he picked up the songs really quickly.

Mich: You've been to Japan recently, how was that? Any interesting stories?
Nader: It was awesome! Everyone there is just very enthusiastic and genuinely accepting, they appreciate the fact that you came all the way to Japan. They help you out too, so it's cool. We played with a bunch of other British bands, a festival type thing in Tokyo with The View, Sunshine Underground and the Ordinary Boys, and lots of other bands.

The fans go nuts for you. You take bullet trains there because they don't have tour buses. They find out what time your train's coming in, and they all stand there and wave and ask for autographs and pictures. It's weird, kinda strange!
