Exam
By Heather Cairns

Click crack tap
Carved table top
Words have drowned
Sunk, slunk, shrunk
Sank, slink, shrank
Words have gone
One plus one
The Fifth Floor
By Heather Cairns

I am here,
grounded,
five flights
above every-
body else
and the messy
broken car
park

The girl next to me

writes
the manifesto
for a movement
she will
call
Futurism. She
has been up
all night,
my friends

The boy behind me

stares at the
shoes
of a young
Charles Dickens
as he
bites his pen
in
half

The light fitter

just stamps
LOUD
on the
ground and
cracks
his fingers
two by
two.
Hurrah

The builder

fiddles with
bricks
like a glow
worm
fiddles
with light

I

am stuck
in my room:
A
foreign
bug. A
travelling
salesman.
