The Beverley 10k Run - Sunday 15th May 05
By Jonathan Rollison
|
The Beverley 10k - what a fantastic morning - well done Beverley Athletics Club!
This was my first ever running event since school - 26 years ago.
The main highlight was to see my 11 year old in the fun run come storming back into the
main arena at full tilt looking determined to get a few places up the field in the 2k race.
He admitted later that he started the home sprint too early, but he did hold the position to the tape!
Well done Matthew!
|
|
During my training, which I didn't particularly enjoy but continued while away from home in London,
I changed my goal from finishing to getting over the finish line in 45 minutes.
On the day the weather was ideal and surely helped, but the greatest motivation came from other runners.
In particular a tall chap, Chris, who ran at a pace which was comfortable and gave me encouragement
at the right time.
|
|
The enormity of the event only really hit home when the rise to the top cattle grid revealed
a long line of bobbing heads in front - I daren't look back!
Buttercup yellow marshals along the route with outsretched arms and often clapping
encouragingly guided and cajoled us along the way to the final downhill section into Saturday Market.
Whoever says that Toll Gavel and Butcher Row aren't hills, don't believe them!
|
The last section to the finishing line loomed - have I made it, do I try going faster, will my legs carry me?
Try a sprint? Don't be daft! Someone shouted out my name - someone there to support us in the spectators
- this felt great, there's the finish - I've done it!
My family were there to catch me only 30 seconds beyond my 45 minute goal!
It was a feeling of euphoria.
|
|
|
If you have ever considered running for fitness or a pastime or just for fun -
try doing it to build up for a fun race like a 10k, it makes the training worth it and
you feel great just being part of an event where young and old, experienced and
novice runners take part together and just do it!
Will I be there next year? Possibly, but I do have a cycle challenge looming - just a small
trip - London to Beverley! Bye!

2004 Beverley Annual 10k Race and Fun Run By Mo
|
|
On a beautiful, sunny Sunday morning May 16th, I headed off to the Beverley Annual 10k run to capture
some photographs and do my best to find a racer who may write about the experience to accompany them.
Clearly as it's me writing this I was unsuccessful, maybe next year, so you'll have to put up
with my scribbling of the day.

I can't remember the first time I went to Speedway. I can however, remember two of
the riders, Jan Stapman and Joe Screen.
I can't remember

Sports, Football - In Reply To Football Sugar Daddies - Helping or Killing (By Steve Everett) By Gareth Marshall
|
|
First of all, I have to concede that I actually agree with Steve about the crux of his article.
There's nothing more satisfying than seeing a team who seemingly represent everything
that is bad about the modern game and who have pretty much had riches and success
handed to them on a plate
