Beware of the Cat - Beverley 10k - Sunday 15th May 05
By Mike Pullon
The 2003 Beverley 10 k was , at 44 , my first attempt at any sort of competitive running for about
30 years. As part of a weight loss, and fitness gain, plan over the previous year I had been
running about 2 miles a day and felt that this event would be a good test for me.
My goal was to finish and if possible not last. In the event I found that the motivation of participation drove me on to a time of 48.03.
I entered for the 2004 event but a run in with our cat on the stairs of our house put me out of action from April through to September. In November I found that I had developed a condition that put me out of training until February 2005.
So taking part in the 2005 event took on real significance to me as a real motivation to get back to the level of fitness I achieved in 2003.
Getting to the start line this Sunday felt like something of a victory in itself. I hoped that I was up to getting round in under 50 minutes and set my self a target of 8 minutes between each mile marker out to mile 5 .
The slow start caused by early bunching acted as a good brake against enthusiasm and got me to the first mile at 8.5 minutes . As in 2003 I found that running with so many others, and having the opportunity to get along side and then go past people ahead of me pulled me to a much better run than I thought I was capable of.
One of the great motivators during the run comes at about 3.5 miles, as you turn away from
Walkington back to Beverley where a marshall provides a count of the runners going by -
to hear that I was in the first 400 came as a great surprise and seemed to put
strength back in my legs.
I passed the 5 mile marker at 40 minutes which meant that, accidents aside, I felt I could get back in under 50 minutes.
The last mile and a bit down the hill and through the town was particularly enjoyable as the encouragement of the spectators, including my wife who I managed to pick out, and the competitiveness of the other runners act as real spurs.
As in 2003 I found the organisation, weather and overall spirit of the event were just excellent.
Brimming with a sense of achievement for a 47.27 run I have today completed the entry forms for two more events this summer and, as long as I avoid tripping over the cat again, I am hopeful of getting round them both in reasonable times.

The Beverley 10k Run - Sunday 15th May 05 By Jonathan Rollison
The Beverley 10k - what a fantastic morning - well done Beverley Athletics Club!
This was my first ever running event since school - 26 years ago.
The main highlight was to see my 11 year old in the fun run come storming back into the
main arena at full tilt looking determined to get a few places up the field in the 2k race.
He admitted later that he started the home sprint too early, but

2004 Beverley Annual 10k Race and Fun Run By Mo
On a beautiful, sunny Sunday morning May 16th, I headed off to the Beverley Annual 10k run to capture
some photographs and do my best to find a racer who may write about the experience to accompany them.
Clearly as it's me writing this I was unsuccessful, maybe next year, so you'll have to put up
with my scribbling of the day.

Why do I love speedway? My Dad used to go before I was born. As I started getting older I went more often. But I remember I was four when I first started to go.
I can't remember the first time I went to Speedway. I can however, remember two of
the riders, Jan Stapman and Joe Screen.
I can't remember

Sports, Football - In Reply To Football Sugar Daddies - Helping or Killing (By Steve Everett) By Gareth Marshall

First of all, I have to concede that I actually agree with Steve about the crux of his article.
There's nothing more satisfying than seeing a team who seemingly represent everything
that is bad about the modern game and who have pretty much had riches and success
handed to them on a plate
